Besides personal effects,
visitors are permitted to bring in the following items duty
free:200 cigarettes (or 50 cigars, or 250g of unrolled
tobacco), a quart (0.94L) of liquor and 500mL of cologne or
perfume. Cameras (including video cameras), radios, cassette
players and calculators can be brought into the country, but
they're supposed to be declared on arrival and taken out
upon departure. In reality no one ever seems to check and if
you try to declare your cameras on arrival you're usually
waved on through.
Any foreign currency in excess of US$2000 must be declared
upon entry. Mobile phones may be confiscated and held by
customs personnel on arrival at Yangon international airport
and returned upon your departure.
See Export Restrictions in the Shopping section at the end
of this chapter for a list of items that cannot be taken out
of the country.
